The
death of any human being is an event in itself. The death of a celebrity is
even more so, on the public level. Van Cliburn was more than a celebrity. He
was a symbol of an epoch. He was larger than life.
To
get an important glimpse of his world-historical significance, read my entry Vanechka!, posted on this blog on March
19th, 2011. For me, he was a personal thing, too. I heard him live
four times, and met him once, all in 1958. He was one of the pegs connecting me
to the memories of my past.
Rest
in peace, good man. You’ve done well...
