Here is a note for the Religion
section on the significance of what I am calling the new improved religions. New, modernized forms of
religion are springing up all around, and particularly in America. They are
those which do not even strive to create a brand-new cult of worship, but
merely snatch an existing religious denomination, and try to reform it to the
point where such an alteration changes the ethical, theological, and dogmatic
substance of the specific religion, yet, without changing its hereditary title,
and thus succeed only in creating a new type of bastard culture, producing a
destructive effect on the mother culture, which they leave behind.
Tuning in to the so-called Religion
Specials on CNN, and on other channels, I watch some illiterate,
empty-headed guys and gals with pleasant, clueless smiles discuss how happy
they are with their new church that puts the focus not on some stupid afterlife,
but on the here and now, and on what people can do to improve their daily lives
today, and how one doesn’t have to believe in a god at all, to enjoy the
freedom of worship with the others, who come to the same church with him or
her…
How is this bastardism,
this degenerative phenomenon made possible at all, if not by the fact that the
more traditional, and less recognizable as bastards themselves, religious forms
of worship have enabled the bold intruders and impersonators to barge in, and
occupy the existing moral vacuum with yet additional form of pseudo-religious immorality?
